How to Start a Run Club (or Any Weekly Community) in Your City

How to start a weekly run club or any city community: a fixed time, a short page, and a habit people can join without a committee.

A run club does not start with a logo. It starts with a time and a corner that you will be standing on even if only two people come. The same rule fits a book club, a weekend football game, or a founders’ breakfast. Weekly communities die when the slot moves every week and the details live in a story that expired.

This is the smallest version that lasts.

Pick a slot you can keep for eight weeks

  • Same day, same time, same meeting point. Write the landmark the way a stranger would find it: “gate 2, under the board,” not “the usual place.”
  • A distance or a duration people can finish before work or class. A social 5K with a walking option will outlast a hero workout.
  • Eight weeks before you change anything. If you move the slot in week three, you do not have a club. You have a group chat.

You are the commitment. The app is only the page.

A page, not a broadcast list

Create one event people can reuse as the home for the club, or a repeating event if you publish each week. The page should say:

  • When and where.
  • Who it is for, including beginners.
  • What to bring (shoes, water) and what you will not provide.
  • Whether it is free. Most clubs should stay free. If you ever charge for a special session, take it on the page so you are not collecting UPI screenshots. That path is how to sell tickets online in India.

Ask people to register even when it is free. A name and a phone number is how you message the group when the gate moves, and how you know if anyone is coming. Check-in, if you want a count, is a QR scan: event check-in.

The first month

  • Week 0. Tell ten people you already run or walk with. Stand at the point on time.
  • Week 1. Post one photo and the same link. Do not start a second Instagram account yet.
  • Week 2. Ask one other person to lead the warm-up so the club is not only you.
  • Week 3. Write down the route. People who come alone need to know they will not get dropped.
  • Week 4. A short note in the group: same time next month. That is the retention post. Not a reel.

Promotion without ads, if you want a slightly bigger first week, is Instagram and WhatsApp. For a club, WhatsApp matters more.

Safety and tone

  • Share the route with someone who is not running.
  • Say out loud that people can turn back. A club that shames a slow first-timer does not get a second timer.
  • Do not collect money “for water” in cash with no list. If you need money, put a small ticket on the page or skip it.
  • One person watches the crossing. That is a role, not a personality.

The same shape, not running

Swap the route for a table, a pitch, or a court.

  • Book club: same café, one chapter, a page with the title of the month.
  • Football: same ground, a cap on numbers, a waitlist when the list is full.
  • Founder breakfast: a start time, a venue, and a question people answer when they register so you are not hosting strangers with no context.

The tools do not change. A fixed slot, a page, a list, and you showing up.

If you are in Jalandhar or Phagwara, the local roundup of what else is on is things to do in Jalandhar and Phagwara. Put your club on the city’s event list so it is findable when someone searches the city, not only when they already know you.

Ready to publish the slot?

Create the event, set it free, and send the link to the ten people who will make week one real.
